Special Olympics ~ Stillwater

Well it was awsum as usual, but this years Special Olympics held something new for me. I became a coach last year for me son so he could compete on the state level. This year he has had an awsum teacher who was very involved. Hi five to her!!! Anyway, I was just like a helper with credentials so to speak this year. It opened my eyes even more about children and people with physical handicaps. My son is high functioning and requires little supervision.

This trip I ended up helping one boy a lot who MUST have his walker to go anywhere. I take one girl down to where she needs to be for opening ceremonies because she is a senior and gets to walk in the parade. I head back out to the front of the IBA gym to try and locate the rest of our crew. There is the lil gent with the walker. He having that is allowed to be on the floor level with someone. So I say I will do it. It was really neat because we were right next to all the VIP’s including Barry Switzer.

There is also another lesson that I learned years ago that is applied in this story. When parents divorce so many children suffer, mine have not. I have been divorced for many years and still fight with my ex over trivial stuff usually. When it comes to our four children we seem to pull it out of our #$@’s when we need to. He attends these functions just as I do and I do try and avoid him, lol.

This year we needed one another oddly enough and it wasn’t for our child, but someone else’s. He helped me with lil gent and all that that implies. He’d pick him up and place him in the front seat of the truck and place his walker in the back. We both had to time ourselves to get where we needed to go and be on time knowing lil gents restrictions on getting anywhere quick. That meant finding adequate parking and etc…

So please think before you park in a handicap parking space and help those who need helping. Opening a door might seem minor, but for some it can be a great effort! I don’t get upset when I have to park far away from where I am going. Its called exercise!!!

A bad line of storms crossed our state that night and the gent who runs OSU got backk on the stage and made an announcement. He wanted to update everyone on the weather situation. He informed us that all the volunteers at each entrance had been instructed to not let ANYONE out! I though he was joking at first and then realized he wasn’t. Some of the tents that had beenĀ  set up were destroyed with that storm. Funny how things work out. Thanks to our hard working weather people and moderm technolgy no one was hurt and left out in the elements. That areana ws packed full of people and we could not have been in a more safer place. Kinda kewl when you think about all the what if’s considering the chances of tornados/wind shears in this state. That line of storms couldn’t have timed itself better!!!

Gettin' you rubbed the right way!
